Special Events and Celebrations at the OMT

In June this year OMT will be hosting part of the Bristol Bear Fiesta. This very popular social event for gay men
(“bear” is a term referring to gay men of the larger or hairier variety!) is now in its fifth year. Chris was one of the original organisers and the event has grown each year – last year it is estimated nearly five hundred people attended throughout the weekend. This year there is a trip to the Bristol Blue Glass factory and several Bear-B-Qs, and we are sponsoring the popular Half-Yard-of-Ale competition which is one of the ways in which we will be raising money for local charities throughout the weekend. In May 2007 Alderman John McLaren, one of our regular patrons, celebrated his 70th Birthday with a party for friends and colleagues at Old Market Tavern. John was a City Counsellor for some years and also a Labour Party Parliamentary Candidate.
Guests of honour were John’s mother who is now in her 90th year and the Lord and Lady Mayoress. Also present were a Cross-Party representation of City Counsellors and many of John’s friends both young and not-so-old. We laid on a barbecue and despite some early rain the weather improved throughout the day.
It is even rumoured that the Lord Mayor was almost late for another engagement as he was enjoying himself so much. A local singer provided very popular cabaret and the party continued throughout the afternoon and evening.
